Basecamp at Skansbukta, Billefjorden

Dickson Land is situated on the
north side of Isfjorden, between Billefjorden and Dicksonfjorden.
In six days we will also visit many historical sites, among others Pyramiden.We have also four full days
for excursion by foot, along the coast or into the land. Overnight
in turf hut (a Lappish tent). The landscape will be changing a
lot, the mountains surrounding us are quite unique: steep mountains
with sediments telling us the geological history of Svalbard ,
narrow canyons and thousands of nesting fulmars. We have boat transport
the first and the last day. Minimum number of participants 4 persons .
by day program:
Day 1: Pick up at
your hotel in Longyearbyen. Information and briefing about the
trip, security, equipment etc. Last preparations and packing
of rucksacks. As soon as we are ready we start off by car to
the pier, and we go aboard the boat. The boat will cross Isfjorden
and we land by zodiacs in Skansbukta (ca 3 hours). Skansbukta is one
of the most beautiful places in Isfjorden, surrounded with a lot of impressive
mountains and many remains from the human activities in the beginning
of last century. Warm lunch will be served. In the afternoon we walk
along the coast, which we will follow for some hours . On the other side
of Isfjorden we can see the mountains surrounding Longyearbyen. We arrive
in basecamp late afternoon. Dinner and overnight in tent. The dogs will
help us to carry parts of the equipment during the day, and they will
also stay around the tents at night, to alarm us in case of Polar bears
approaching the camp.
Day 2: Breakfast, breaking camp and packing equipment.
We climb up the Høgskolefjellet, a mountain 600 meters high from where we will have a fantastic view over the Isfjord and the mountains around Longyearbyen. A warm lunch will be served. We go on in the afternoon walking along the coastline. Late in the afternoon we will return
to our basecamp. Dinner and overnight in tent.
Day 3: Breakfast, breaking camp and packing of the equipment. Today we will walk inland in the Skans Valley, going through wonderful canyons with bird's nests and reaching the deepest part of the Valley with its waterfalls. A warm lunch and then we go back towards our basecamp for the same way finding maybe some fossils. Dinner and overnight in tent.
Day 4: Breakfast, breaking camp and packing of the equipment. We start our day walking through the Skans bay and visiting Swedish mine ruins from the twenties. We go on along the west coast having a nice view of the Billefjord.
We turn into the internal part of the valley crossing a dry part and reaching the pass close to the Skansen mountain. A warm lunch and then we go on downhill through a narrow valley. We are back to the basecamp late in the afternoon; we have dinner and sleep in the tent.
Day 5: Breakfast, breaking camp and packing of the equipment. We walk along the coast towards the Student Valley, and then on heading Kapp Thordsen. In the afternoon we will arrive and visit the”Svenske Huset”.
Svenske Huset” was built in 1872 by the Swedish company AB Isfjorden. The most famous and tragic over wintering in the history of Svalbard took place here. We have a warm lunch amd in the late afternoon we are back at the Basecamp where we'll have a barbecue on the beach. Overnight in tent.
Day 6: Breakfast, breaking camp and packing of the equipment.
Today we pack everything and early in the afternoon the
boat will pick us up. We will sail along Billefjorden and visit Pyramiden,
which closed in 1998. All the houses and the mining structure is still
there as if it was yesterday. We have some time for a closer look at
this ghost city. The view is wonderful, with Nordenskiöldbreen on
the other side of Adolfbukta. Return by boat along Billefjorden with
the extraordinary scenery of the mountains around. We cross Sassenfjorden
and in short time we arrive in Longyearbyen. We drive you to your hotel.
Minimum number of participants: 4 persons.
Included in the price: all meals, nights as described
in the tour programme.
madras, Greenland dogs (except for the Basecamp Isfjorden), rescue insurance,
camping equipment, experience Guide, emergency/safety equipment, transportation
as described in program (by car, boat).
Not included in the price: sleeping bag, flights,
meals in Longyearbyen, beverages, mineral water, personal travel insurance.
